A story for: Cleo, Age 4
Created September 08, 2026
Once upon a time, in a cozy little apartment high up in a tall building, lived a sweet girl named Cleo. Cleo loved her city home. She loved the soft hum of the city, like a gentle lullaby, and the way the lights twinkled like sleepy stars all around her window.
Tonight, Cleo was getting ready for bed. Her mommy had helped her put on her softest pajamas, the ones with tiny little clouds on them. "Time for bed, little star," Mommy whispered, tucking Cleo into her warm covers. Cleo snuggled her favorite fluffy elephant, Ellie, close.
From her window, Cleo could see the city was starting to get sleepy too. The big, bright billboards were dimming their colorful lights, one by one. The busy yellow taxis, which had been zooming all day, were now resting in long, quiet lines. Even the big buses, who usually rumbled like gentle giants, were making their last quiet journeys home.
Cleo watched as the streetlights came on, making little golden puddles on the dark sidewalks. She imagined them winking goodnight to the sleeping trees and the quiet park benches. The tall buildings, which stood so grand and tall during the day, now looked like giant, peaceful shadows reaching for the moon.
She saw a few little lights still on in other apartments, like tiny fireflies blinking hello. Cleo imagined the people inside were also getting ready for their cozy sleep. Maybe a little boy was reading a story, or a mommy was singing a soft song, just like her mommy did.
Cleo’s own room felt so safe and warm. The soft glow from her nightlight made little patterns on the wall, like dancing dreams. She could hear the very faint, faraway sound of a train, chugging along like a sleepy caterpillar, carrying its passengers to their own warm beds.
“Goodnight, city,” Cleo whispered, her voice barely a breath. “Goodnight, sleepy taxis. Goodnight, quiet buildings. Goodnight, twinkling lights.”
Ellie the elephant felt so soft against her cheek. Cleo took a deep, gentle breath, and then another. Her eyelids felt heavy, like two little curtains ready to close. The city hummed its lullaby, a soft, steady sound that wrapped around her like a warm blanket.
Cleo smiled, a little sleepy smile. The city was tucking her in, just like Mommy did. And as the city lights twinkled their goodnight, Cleo drifted off to sleep, dreaming of fluffy clouds and quiet, golden streetlights.
