A story for: Sage, Age 5
Created July 26, 2026
Far, far away, in the deepest, bluest parts of the ocean, lived a very special whale named Sage. Sage wasn't the biggest whale, or the fastest, but she had the most wonderful voice. Her songs were like shimmering pearls, floating through the water, warm and gentle.
Every evening, as the sun dipped its sleepy head below the wavy horizon, Sage knew it was her time to sing. It was her job, a very important job, to sing the ocean to sleep. She would take a deep, slow breath, filling her enormous lungs with the salty air, and then a soft, humming sound would begin.
First, her song would reach the little clownfish, who were just finishing their games among the sea anemones. They would stop their wiggling and listen, their bright orange fins slowly settling down. Then, the busy crabs, scuttling on the sandy bottom, would pause their claw-clacking. Sage's song was like a soft blanket, wrapping around them, telling them it was time to rest.
Her melodies drifted higher, past the dancing jellyfish, whose lights dimmed a little with each passing note. The big, wise sea turtles, who had been swimming all day, would find a cozy spot on a warm rock and close their ancient eyes. Even the playful dolphins, usually full of flips and splashes, would slow their dives, their calls turning into gentle clicks and whistles, sleepy and content.
Sage loved watching the ocean settle down. She sang of the quiet stars that would soon twinkle above the waves, and of the soft currents that would carry sweet dreams to all the sleeping sea creatures. Her voice was like a gentle hug, telling everyone that it was safe to close their eyes and dream of seaweed snacks and happy swims.
Sometimes, a tiny starfish, too sleepy to move, would just listen, feeling the vibrations of Sage's song through its little arms. Other times, a family of glittering silver fish would gather nearby, swaying gently to the rhythm of her lullaby, their scales reflecting the fading light in a sleepy dance.
As the very last hint of sunlight disappeared, and the moon began to peek out, Sage's song would become even softer, a whisper carried on the deep ocean currents. All the little waves on the surface grew calmer, like they were listening too, their splashes turning into gentle lapping sounds.
Finally, with the ocean completely quiet and peaceful, every creature tucked into its sleepy spot, Sage would sing her very last, most tender note. It was a note full of love and peace. Then, she would find her own special, warm current, let her great body float gently, and close her own kind eyes. Drifting softly, surrounded by the quiet ocean she had sung to sleep, Sage, too, would fall into a deep, peaceful slumber, ready for another day of singing the world awake when the sun returned.
