A story for: Zoe, Age 4
Created August 21, 2026
Once upon a time, in a tall, sparkly city filled with friendly lights, lived a little girl named Zoe. Zoe had a window in her room, and every night, she loved to watch the city change as the sun said goodnight.
Tonight, the sky was painted in soft, sleepy pinks and purples. Zoe snuggled into her warm bed, her favorite fluffy bunny, Patches, tucked close beside her. She watched as the first stars began to peek out, like tiny diamonds sprinkled on a dark velvet cloth.
"Look, Patches," Zoe whispered, her voice soft and sweet. "The city is getting ready for sleep too."
First, she saw the big yellow buses, usually so busy, slowly driving to their cozy garages. Their bright headlights dimmed as they settled down for the night. Then, the little cars, like busy beetles, started to slow their zippy movements, finding their parking spots and resting until morning.
The tall buildings, which had twinkled with many office lights during the day, now started to turn off their windows one by one. It was like they were winking goodnight. Only a few gentle, golden lights stayed on, like nightlights for the whole city.
The streetlights, usually so bright, cast long, soft glows onto the empty sidewalks. They looked like friendly sentinels, watching over the sleeping city. Even the big, rumbling subway trains, way down deep, started to hum a quieter tune as fewer people rode them.
Zoe yawned a big, sleepy yawn. The city sounds, usually a cheerful buzz, were now a gentle murmur. She could hear the faraway whoosh of a breeze rustling leaves in a park she knew. It sounded like the city was breathing softly.
She closed her eyes for a moment, imagining the sleepy city. The busy shops were quiet, their doors locked tight. The playgrounds were empty, waiting patiently for the sunshine to bring children back to play. Even the big fountain in the park seemed to splash a little slower, a gentle, rhythmic sound.
Her eyelids felt heavy, like two little curtains ready to close for the night. Patches, soft and warm against her cheek, felt just right. The gentle hum of the city, now a soft lullaby, wrapped around Zoe like a warm blanket.
She imagined herself floating softly over the quiet streets, a tiny star among the bigger ones, and as the last of the city lights twinkled their goodnights, Zoe drifted off to sleep, a peaceful smile on her face, dreaming of tomorrow's sunny city adventures.
