Nora and the Moon's Lullaby

A story for: Nora, Age 6

Created September 18, 2026

The stars were just beginning to twinkle, like tiny diamonds scattered across a velvet blanket, and little Nora was tucked snugly in her bed. She loved watching the sky from her window, especially when the big, friendly Moon began to glow.

Tonight, however, the Moon seemed a little restless. It wobbled just a tiny bit, and its light flickered softly, as if it couldn't quite settle down. Nora watched with a thoughtful frown. "Poor Moon," she whispered. "It looks like it needs a good night's sleep, just like me."

Just then, a soft, warm breeze drifted through her open window, carrying with it a faint, sweet scent of lavender and gentle starlight. A shimmer of scales appeared, and then a friendly face peeked in. It was Lumina, the dragon who lived on the highest, fluffiest cloud.

Lumina wasn't like the dragons in exciting adventure stories. She was a gentle dragon, with scales that sparkled like the inside of a seashell and eyes as kind as a warm hug. She loved helping things settle down for the night.

"Hello, Nora," Lumina whispered, her voice like rustling leaves. "You noticed it too, didn't you? The Moon is having trouble drifting off tonight."

Nora nodded. "It looks like it needs a lullaby." She hummed a little tune, but it was too quiet for the big Moon to hear.

Lumina smiled, a soft, sleepy smile. "Perhaps it needs a special kind of lullaby, one made of starlight and soft wishes." She gently unfurled one of her magnificent wings. It wasn't scaly and rough, but soft and feathery, like the downiest pillow.

"Watch," Lumina murmured. She began to flap her wings ever so slowly, sending gentle currents of air upwards. With each gentle beat, tiny sparks of starlight detached from her wings and floated towards the Moon. They weren't bright and dazzling sparks, but soft, shimmering motes of light, like fireflies dancing in slow motion.

As the starlight floated around the Moon, Lumina began to hum. Her hum was deep and soft, like the rumble of a distant, friendly thundercloud. It was a melody woven from the quiet whisper of the wind and the gentle splash of a sleepy stream. Nora felt her own eyelids grow heavy just listening to it.

The Moon seemed to sigh, a long, contented sigh. The flickering stopped, and its light became a steady, peaceful glow. The wobbling ceased, and it settled comfortably in its place in the sky, looking very much like it was about to nod off.

Lumina continued her soft humming, her wings moving slower and slower, until the last few starlight sparks had nestled around the sleeping Moon. She turned back to Nora, her eyes gleaming with sleepy kindness.

"There," Lumina whispered. "The Moon is fast asleep now, dreaming sweet dreams of stardust." She gave Nora a gentle nod. "And I think it's time for a certain little girl to do the same."

Nora yawned, a wide, happy yawn. The room felt so cozy and warm. She snuggled deeper into her covers, the image of the peacefully sleeping Moon and the gentle, humming dragon filling her mind. Lumina gave a soft sigh, a puff of lavender-scented air, and then, as silently as she had arrived, she drifted away into the starlit night.

Nora closed her eyes, a soft smile on her face. The Moon was sleeping, and now, so was she.
