A story for: Cleo, Age 7
Created July 29, 2026
Far, far beneath the shimmering surface of the ocean, in a world of soft, blue light and swaying kelp forests, lived a very special whale named Cleo.
Cleo wasn't like other whales who zoomed through the water, looking for tasty krill. Cleo loved to sing. Her songs were not loud or booming; instead, they were gentle, humming melodies, like the softest whisper of a seashell.
Every evening, as the sun began to dip below the waves, painting the sky in shades of pink and orange, Cleo would begin her important job. It was her job to sing the ocean to sleep. She would find her favorite spot, a cozy, sandy patch near a coral garden, and take a deep, slow breath.
Then, a low, sweet sound would drift from her, filling the water all around. It was a lullaby, just for the sea. The little fish, who had been darting and playing all day, would slow their wiggles. Their fins would flutter just a little, and their eyes would grow heavy. They'd tuck themselves into anemones, feeling safe and warm.
Tiny seahorses, who had been clinging to seaweed, would loosen their tails and float gently downward, dreaming of adventures in the morning. Even the shy, glowing jellyfish, usually pulsing with light, would dim their shine, listening to Cleo’s peaceful tune.
Cleo's song would travel past the swaying seagrass, past the sleeping sea turtles tucked into their shells, and even past the big, friendly octopuses who were curling their arms up like soft blankets. Each note was like a soft kiss, telling everyone it was time to rest.
Her melodies told stories of quiet starlight dancing on the waves, of the moon casting silver paths across the water, and of the peaceful dreams that waited for all the ocean creatures. There were no scary parts, only warmth and safety.
As Cleo sang, she felt a gentle calm spread through her own big body. Her tail, which had swished all day, moved slower and slower. Her enormous heart beat in a steady, comforting rhythm, just like the gentle lapping of the waves on a distant shore.
Finally, when the last sleepy hum had left her, and the ocean was perfectly still and quiet, Cleo would find a soft current. She would close her own gentle eyes, feeling the cool water embrace her. The lullaby she had sung for everyone else now wrapped around her, too, a sweet, silent promise of a peaceful night. And with a soft, happy sigh, Cleo, the singing whale, would drift off to sleep, dreaming of tomorrow’s sunrise and the quiet songs she would sing again.
