A story for: Jude, Age 4
Created August 13, 2026
The stars were just beginning to peek out, like tiny silver buttons sewn onto a big, dark blanket. Jude, with his fluffy red pajamas, stood by the window with his mommy. Below them, the city lights twinkled and sparkled, like a million fireflies getting ready for bed.
“Look, Mommy!” Jude whispered, pointing a small finger. “The yellow cars are going home!” Indeed, the taxis below were glowing, their lights painting streaks on the wet street, hurrying to their garages for a good night’s rest.
Mommy smiled. “Yes, darling. Everyone is getting sleepy.” She picked Jude up, and he snuggled into her warm arms. His soft, blue blanket, named ‘Cloudy’ because it was so soft and fluffy, was waiting for him in his cozy bed.
Jude yawned a big, wide yawn. “Even the buildings?” he asked, his voice a little sleepy already.
“Even the buildings,” Mommy whispered, carrying him to his bed. “They stand so tall and strong all day, holding up the sky. Now, they're getting ready to rest, too. See how some of their lights are turning off, one by one?”
Jude watched as a few more windows in the tall skyscrapers went dark. It was like the buildings were closing their eyes, getting ready to dream their own big, building dreams.
Mommy tucked Cloudy around Jude, making a warm, soft nest. “The buses are parking, the shops are dimming their signs, and even the big bridges are sighing a soft goodnight to the river.” She gently stroked his hair. “Soon, the only sounds will be the quiet hum of the night, and the soft rustle of the trees outside your window.”
Jude closed his eyes for a moment, imagining the sleepy city. He could almost hear the little whispers of the wind as it tiptoed through the streets, telling everyone it was time to sleep. He thought of the streetlights, standing guard like friendly giants, watching over the sleeping city until morning.
“Goodnight, little city,” Jude mumbled, his voice getting very, very quiet. He imagined the buildings settling down, the cars quiet in their garages, and the streetlights blinking slowly, like sleepy eyes. He felt so warm and safe, wrapped in Cloudy, with Mommy’s gentle hand on his back. The city was sleeping, and soon, Jude would be dreaming of all the good things that happen when the sun comes up again. He snuggled deeper, his breath becoming soft and even, drifting off into a peaceful sleep, just like the quiet city outside his window.
