A story for: Eli, Age 6
Created September 23, 2026
The last rays of sunlight painted the tall buildings outside Eli’s window in shades of sleepy orange and soft purple. Eli snuggled deeper into his cozy bed, his favorite plush elephant, Peanuts, tucked securely under his arm.
He watched as the city lights began to twinkle, one by one, like little stars waking up to say goodnight. The streetlights flickered on, casting long, dancing shadows that looked like friendly giants stretching before bed. The cars, usually a busy rumble, now made a quieter, softer hum, like a lullaby just for the city.
Eli closed his eyes and imagined his own special city, just for bedtime. He pictured the buildings made of fluffy clouds, so soft you could bounce off them. The streets weren't hard asphalt, but ribbons of moonlight, shimmering and cool beneath his bare feet. Instead of busy taxis, there were gentle gondolas that floated on rivers of stardust, carrying sleepy passengers to their dream homes.
He imagined the windows of these cloud buildings glowing with a warm, golden light, like tiny fireplaces inside each home. He could almost hear the quiet murmurs of families reading bedtime stories and tucking their little ones into bed, just like his own mummy and daddy did for him.
Eli floated past a park where the trees had leaves of glistening dew, making them sparkle like diamonds. Fireflies danced in slow, graceful circles, lighting up the soft grass where tiny dream creatures, no bigger than his thumb, were gathering for a quiet game of hide-and-seek. Their giggles were like the gentle tinkling of wind chimes.
Further on, he saw a grand clock tower, but this clock didn't tick loudly. Instead, it played a soft, sleepy melody that floated over the entire city, telling everyone it was time to close their eyes and dream sweet dreams. Each note was like a soft feather, drifting down and settling over the city, encouraging peaceful sleep.
Eli felt a wave of calm wash over him. He wasn’t in his room anymore; he was drifting gently on a stardust gondola, Peanuts still beside him. The cool, soft air brushed his cheeks, and the sleepy melody from the clock tower played in his ears. He could see his own cloud home in the distance, its window glowing with a particularly warm and inviting light. It looked like the coziest place in the whole wide world.
As the gondola moved slower and slower, Eli felt his eyelids grow heavy. The city of dreams was a wonderful place, full of quiet magic and gentle beauty. He snuggled deeper, a soft sigh escaping his lips. The last thing he heard was the gentle hum of the city outside, blending perfectly with the sleepy melody from the clock tower. Eli was fast asleep, floating into his very own city of sweet dreams.
