A story for: Arlo, Age 5
Created October 14, 2026
Once upon a time, in a cozy little house tucked away like a secret, lived a young boy named Arlo. Arlo loved his pajamas, especially the ones with the little stars that seemed to glow just for him.
Tonight, Arlo was tucked snugly into his bed. The moonbeams peeked through his window, painting silver stripes across his quilt. His teddy bear, Barnaby, was snuggled close, his soft fur a comfort against Arlo’s cheek. But even with Barnaby, Arlo’s mind felt like a little bouncy ball, jumping from one thought to another. He thought about the red ball he played with today, and the funny-shaped cloud he saw, and the crunchy apple he ate.
“It’s okay, little one,” a gentle voice whispered from the little speaker beside his bed. It was his special bedtime story device, ready to tell him tales. Arlo loved his story device. It was like having a warm, friendly cloud full of stories right in his room.
Tonight’s story began with the sound of a gentle stream, gurgling softly as if singing a lullaby. Then, a kind voice, like a soft breeze, began to speak. It told a story about a tiny firefly named Flicker who was learning to make his light glow. Flicker wasn’t worried, because a wise old owl told him that every light, big or small, shines brightest when it’s happy and calm.
Arlo listened as Flicker flew through a field of sleepy flowers, their petals closing for the night. He heard the crickets chirping a quiet goodnight song. The story described the smell of fresh dew on the grass and the soft flutter of a moth’s wings. Arlo imagined himself there, a tiny firefly friend, exploring the peaceful night.
As the story continued, Flicker found a soft, mossy spot and decided to rest. The wise old owl hooted one last, gentle hoot, reminding Flicker to dream sweet dreams. The voice from the speaker grew softer and softer, like a whisper carried on the wind. The gurgling stream sounds became fainter, fading into the quiet of Arlo’s room.
Arlo’s bouncy thoughts slowed down. They weren’t jumping anymore; they were drifting, like little boats on a very calm lake. His eyelids felt heavy, like tiny curtains gently closing. He snuggled deeper into his bed, feeling safe and warm. The soft voice of the story had wrapped around him like a cozy blanket, tucking him in even more.
He took a big, gentle breath. Flicker was sleeping, and so was Arlo’s mind. A peaceful smile touched Arlo’s lips. The last thing he heard, before he drifted off to a land of sweet dreams, was the soft, soothing silence of the room, now filled with the echo of a happy firefly's quiet journey. And Arlo, feeling calm and loved, finally fell into a deep, peaceful sleep.
