A story for: Jude, Age 5
Created June 26, 2026
The day was gently fading, painting the sky with soft, sleepy colours of pink and purple. Little Jude was tucked snugly into his bed, surrounded by his favourite fluffy animals. His bedroom was dim, lit only by the soft glow of a nightlight shaped like a friendly moon.
Jude yawned, a big, wide, happy yawn. He had played so wonderfully today, building towering blocks that reached almost to the ceiling and drawing a rainbow that sparkled with every colour you could imagine. Now, it was time for his special bedtime moment.
His grown-up sat beside him, their voice soft and warm like a cozy blanket. “Tonight, Jude,” they began, “we’re going to think about all the wonderful things that make you, you.”
Jude snuggled deeper under his covers, his eyes wide with sleepy wonder. He liked thinking about wonderful things.
“First,” his grown-up whispered, “let’s remember how kind you are. You shared your favourite toy today, and that made your friend smile so brightly. You are a kind and loving boy, Jude.”
Jude’s tummy felt a little warm and fuzzy at that thought. He did like making his friends happy.
“Next, let’s remember how clever you are,” his grown-up continued. “You figured out how to put that tricky puzzle together all by yourself! Your mind is bright and full of wonderful ideas, Jude.”
Jude remembered the puzzle, how he’d tried and tried until all the pieces fit just right. He felt a little spark of pride glow inside him.
“And let’s not forget how brave you are,” his grown-up said, gently stroking his hair. “Even when something new felt a little bit big, you tried your best. You are a brave and strong boy, Jude.”
Jude thought about trying a new slide at the park earlier. It had looked very tall, but he had gone down anyway! He felt strong, just like they said.
“Most of all, Jude,” his grown-up murmured, their voice like a gentle lullaby, “remember that you are loved. So very, very loved. You are a wonderful, special boy, and you are loved just for being you.”
Jude closed his eyes, feeling all those warm, happy thoughts swirling around him like soft, fluffy clouds. He imagined each kind word as a tiny, twinkling star, floating around his bed, making his room feel safe and peaceful. He was kind, clever, brave, and loved. What a wonderful boy he was.
A deep, peaceful breath lifted his chest. The stars in his mind twinkled softly, and the gentle glow of his moon nightlight seemed to hum a sleepy tune. Jude snuggled his cheek against his pillow, a soft, contented sigh escaping his lips. He was drifting, drifting, surrounded by love and kindness, into the land of sweet, peaceful dreams.
