Ruby and the Sleepy Moon

A story for: Ruby, Age 7

Created September 22, 2026

In a cozy, cloud-soft land, where the stars twinkled like scattered diamonds, lived a very special dragon named Ruby. Ruby wasn't like the dragons in exciting adventure stories. She had scales the color of warm lavender, and her breath smelled faintly of chamomile tea and sleepy wishes.

Every evening, as the sun began its slow journey to bed, Ruby would perch on the tallest, fluffiest cloud. From there, she watched the world grow quiet and dim. She loved the hush that fell over the land, but sometimes, she noticed something peculiar. The Moon, big and round and usually so bright, looked a little... tired.

One night, Ruby saw the Moon yawn a very big, very slow yawn. Its light flickered, as if it was struggling to stay awake. Ruby's kind heart felt a little pang. "Oh dear," she whispered, "the Moon looks so sleepy!"

Ruby knew just what to do. She took a deep breath, and from her gentle snout came a soft, shimmery mist. It wasn't hot and fiery; it was cool and smelled like the sweetest dreams. This was Ruby's special sleep mist.

She blew the mist gently towards the Moon. It drifted like tiny, silver feathers, tickling the Moon's sleepy edges. The Moon blinked slowly, and its light softened even more. Ruby then began to hum, a low, rumbling melody that sounded like a lullaby made of purrs and soft breezes. It was the most soothing sound in the whole wide sky.

As Ruby hummed, she imagined the Moon feeling all cozy and warm, tucked into a blanket of starlight. She pictured it snuggling down, its bright face relaxing, its worries drifting away like the evening clouds. She even imagined the little man in the Moon, if there was one, yawning a final, happy yawn.

The sleep mist swirled around the Moon, wrapping it in a comforting hug. The Moon's light grew dimmer and dimmer, not in a sad way, but in a peaceful, sleepy way. Its edges blurred softly, and a deep, contented sigh seemed to float down from the sky.

Soon, the Moon was completely asleep, glowing with a soft, steady, dreaming light. It looked so peaceful, just like a baby tucked into its crib. Ruby smiled, a warm, happy smile that made her lavender scales glow softly in the dim light. Her work was done for the night.

Feeling a little sleepy herself after all that humming and gentle mist-blowing, Ruby curled up on her cloud. She thought of the sleepy Moon, and all the sleeping children below. She closed her own big, kind eyes, and drifted off into her own sweet dreams, knowing she had helped the night be peaceful and bright, in the softest way possible.
