A story for: Milo, Age 7
Created September 23, 2026
As the last golden rays of sunset painted the tall city buildings in hues of orange and purple, Milo snuggled deeper into his cozy bed. Tonight, the city lights were just beginning to twinkle, like a million tiny stars scattered across the dark velvet sky.
Milo loved his city. Even though it was big and sometimes a little loud during the day, at night it hummed a gentle, sleepy song. He listened closely. First, he heard the soft whoosh of a car passing by, like a friendly whisper on the street below. Then, the distant chime of the old clock tower, a sound so familiar it was like a lullaby just for him.
He thought of his day. He had played with his toy trains, sending them on exciting journeys all across his bedroom rug. He had helped his mom water the little green plants on the windowsill, their leaves feeling cool and soft under his fingertips. And later, he had eaten a delicious dinner, making funny faces with his carrots.
Now, the city was settling down too. The bright, busy storefronts were dimming their lights, one by one, like sleepy eyes closing. The hurried footsteps on the sidewalk had slowed to a gentle stroll. Even the usually bustling playground across the street was quiet, waiting patiently for morning.
Milo imagined the gentle giant buildings standing guard, their windows reflecting the moonlight like sleepy eyes blinking. He pictured the little park where he loved to swing, the swings now still, dreaming of playful pushes and soaring heights. He thought of the soft, gentle breeze that sometimes danced through his open window, bringing with it the sweet scent of night-blooming jasmine from Mrs. Gable’s garden downstairs.
His eyelids felt heavy, like two little curtains slowly closing. He yawned a big, happy yawn. The sounds of the city outside his window were becoming softer, more distant, like music playing from very far away. He heard the faint, rhythmic hum of the building's heating system, a steady, comforting purr.
Milo took a deep breath, filling his lungs with the quiet night air. He felt safe and warm, tucked in his bed. The city, his friendly, big city, was watching over him, just as it did every night. Its quiet whispers and soft hums were like a special song, guiding him gently into dreamland. He closed his eyes, a peaceful smile on his face, and drifted off to sleep.
