Nora's City Lullaby

A story for: Nora, Age 7

Created October 20, 2026

Nora snuggled deep into her soft, blue blankets, her favorite stuffed bunny, Barnaby, tucked right beside her. Outside her window, the city lights twinkled like a thousand tiny stars scattered across a dark velvet cloth.

“Goodnight, city,” she whispered, her voice a sleepy hum. The city didn't answer with words, but with its own gentle lullaby. She could hear the faraway whoosh of a car, like a soft sigh on the breeze. A distant ambulance siren wailed, but tonight it sounded less like an emergency and more like a sleepy cat stretching its voice.

Nora closed her eyes and imagined the city settling down for the night. The busy buses, usually rumbling and bustling, were now parked quietly, dreaming of their routes. The tall buildings, which stood so grand and important during the day, were now just peaceful giants, their windows glowing softly like nightlights.

She pictured the park down the street. The swings, which had been flying high with laughter all afternoon, were now still, swaying ever so slightly in the evening air. The slide, usually zooming with happy children, was smooth and empty, waiting patiently for morning.

Even the little coffee shop on the corner, where the barista always made funny foam shapes in her daddy’s latte, was dark and quiet. The chairs were upside down on the tables, resting after a busy day of welcoming people. The smell of warm cookies and coffee was just a memory, tucked away until sunrise.

Nora imagined the streetlights, tall and slim, turning on one by one, like faithful guardians watching over the sleeping city. They cast long, gentle shadows that danced a slow, quiet jig whenever a gentle breeze passed by.

She thought of the river that snaked through the city, reflecting the moon and the tiny light of an airplane making its quiet journey across the sky. The river flowed steadily, never rushing, just murmuring its secrets to the quiet night. The little boats tied at the docks bobbed ever so gently, rocking to their own sleepy rhythm.

Nora felt her own breathing slow down, matching the city’s quiet rhythm. Her eyelids grew heavy, like two little curtains ready to close for the night show of dreams. Barnaby felt warm and soft beside her, a comforting presence.

She drifted further and further, past the quiet streets, past the sleeping park, past the still river. The city’s gentle hum was now a soft, warm blanket wrapped around her. Soon, Nora was fast asleep, dreaming of twinkling lights and quiet adventures in her peaceful, sleeping city.
