A story for: Kai, Age 3
Created September 22, 2026
The big, bright city was starting to get sleepy, just like Kai. The sun had dipped down, and in its place, millions of tiny lights began to twinkle. Kai snuggled under his soft, blue blanket, peeking out his window.
First, he saw the tall buildings, like friendly giants, blinking their office lights goodbye for the night. One by one, they turned off, getting ready for their own quiet sleep. Kai imagined the buildings yawning, their windows closing like sleepy eyes.
Then, Kai heard the gentle hum of the city. It wasn't loud or busy like during the day. Now, it was a soft, purring sound, like a giant kitten settling down for a nap. He heard a distant, happy honk from a taxi, like a little wave goodbye, and the quiet whisper of tires on the street, going home.
Kai remembered his day's adventures. He had seen a big, red bus that looked like a friendly dragon. He had waved to a sweet lady selling colourful flowers in the park. He had even watched tiny ducks waddle in a fountain, their feathers shining like jewels.
His favorite part was watching the little toy boats sail on the pond. They bobbed up and down, up and down, just like he was bobbing now, sleepy in his bed. He imagined his bed was a little boat, floating gently on a calm, warm sea.
Outside, the streetlights turned on, making soft, golden puddles of light on the pavement. Kai thought they looked like tiny, warm lamps, lighting the way for sleepy dreams. A little breeze rustled the leaves on the tree outside his window, making a soft, shush-shush sound, like a lullaby.
Kai's eyes felt heavy. He thought about the moon, a big, round, sleepy face in the sky, watching over the city. And the stars, like tiny glittery buttons, sewn onto a dark, velvet blanket.
He closed his eyes. The city was quiet now. The friendly giants were sleeping. The purring hum was a lullaby. Kai took a deep, sleepy breath. His little boat was floating, floating... and as the city drifted into dreams, so did Kai, safe and sound, until morning.
