Eli's City of Dreams

A story for: Eli, Age 6

Created September 12, 2026

The city lights twinkled like a thousand tiny stars as Eli looked out his bedroom window. He loved his city. During the day, it buzzed with taxis and chatty people, but at night, it had a secret, gentle hum.

Tonight, Eli was tucked snugly in his bed, his favorite plush elephant, Ellie, beside him. He closed his eyes and imagined his city settling down for sleep, just like him.

First, he imagined the big, tall buildings, like friendly giants, slowly dimming their lights. One by one, the windows went dark, as if the buildings were closing their own sleepy eyes. A few straggler lights stayed on, like little nightlights for the city.

Then, Eli thought about the cars. During the day, they zoomed and honked, but now, they were soft whispers on the road, their headlights like sleepy fireflies. He imagined them gently rolling home to their garages, resting after a long day of journeys.

Next, Eli pictured the parks. The swings, which had soared so high earlier, were now still, waiting patiently for morning. The slides were quiet, their slippery surfaces cool under the moonlight. Even the little squirrels and birds were tucked away in their nests, dreaming of acorns and crumbs.

Eli’s imagination drifted to the big city fountains. During the day, they splashed and giggled, but now, their water fell with a soft, steady rhythm, like a quiet lullaby. *Shhh-shhh-shhh*, the water seemed to say, *time to rest, time to dream*.

He thought about the gentle breeze that sometimes whispered through his open window. It wasn't a blustery, noisy wind like during the day, but a soft, comforting sigh that rustled the leaves on the trees outside. It sounded like the city itself taking a deep, sleepy breath.

Eli snuggled deeper under his covers. He could hear the very faint, faraway sound of a train, a gentle rumble that was almost like a sleepy purr. It was the sound of the city, not awake and bustling, but dreaming and quiet.

He felt Ellie’s soft ear against his cheek. The city outside was preparing for its own beautiful sleep, just like Eli. The streetlights glowed softly, like sleepy eyes watching over everyone. The quiet hum of the night was a comforting blanket, wrapping around his room, and around the whole city.

Eli took a deep, slow breath, just like the city taking its sleepy breath. His eyelids felt heavy, so very heavy. The gentle sounds and soft lights of his beloved city sang him a sweet lullaby. He drifted off, feeling safe and peaceful, into a wonderful, city-themed dream.
