Sage and the Sleeping Castle

A story for: Sage, Age 5

Created July 24, 2026

Once upon a time, nestled amongst the soft, rolling hills and sparkling rivers, stood a magnificent castle. This wasn't just any castle; it was the Sleeping Castle, and its towers glowed with a gentle, sleepy light each evening. Inside, lived a kind little girl named Sage. Sage loved her castle very much, especially when the day was done and the stars began to peek through her window.

Tonight, Sage was getting ready for bed. Her soft, fluffy slippers made no sound as she padded across the warm, polished floor of her bedroom. Outside, the moon was a friendly, round face, smiling down at the castle. Sage looked at her favorite teddy bear, Bartholomew, who was already snuggled under the covers of his tiny bed. “It’s time to help the castle sleep, Bartholomew,” she whispered, and Bartholomew seemed to nod his head, his button eyes twinkling.

First, Sage went to the tall, arched window. She blew a soft, feathery kiss towards the sky, sending goodnight wishes to the stars. Then, she gently pulled her velvet curtains closed, making her room feel even cozier and more snug. The light from her special star lamp cast a warm, golden glow on her walls, making patterns of sleepy clouds and dreaming birds.

Next, Sage took her favorite storybook from her nightstand. It was a book about a little squirrel who found the warmest, coziest acorn for his winter nap. She opened it to a page she loved, admiring the soft, painted pictures. She didn't read the words out loud, but hummed a tiny, quiet tune that felt like a lullaby just for the pictures.

After humming her little song, Sage carefully placed the book back. She climbed into her big, comfy bed, pulling the soft blankets up to her chin. Bartholomew was right beside her, ready for his own bedtime story. Sage snuggled down, feeling the softness of her pillow.

She closed her eyes and imagined the entire Sleeping Castle settling down for the night. She pictured the grand knights' hall, where the brave knights' armor now stood quietly, waiting for morning. She imagined the kitchen, where all the pots and pans were tucked away, dreaming of delicious meals. Even the little birds who lived in the ivy on the castle walls were snuggled in their nests, their tiny heads tucked under their wings.

Sage took a deep, gentle breath, and then let it out slowly, like a soft sigh. She felt herself becoming very, very still, as if she were a part of the sleeping castle itself. The golden glow from her star lamp grew softer, and softer still. Her eyelids felt heavy, like little sleepy clouds. The last thing she heard was the gentle whisper of the night wind outside, singing a lullaby to the Sleeping Castle, and to Sage, as she drifted into a sweet, peaceful sleep.
