Ava and the Dream Lantern

A story for: Ava, Age 7

Created September 05, 2026

In a cozy burrow, snuggled deep beneath a whispering willow tree, lived a brave little bunny named Ava. Ava had the softest white fur, a twitchy pink nose, and ears that were always listening for the gentle hum of the night. Every evening, as the sun dipped below the hills, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple, Ava would peek out, her heart full of a special mission.

Ava was the keeper of the Dream Lantern. It wasn't just any lantern; it glowed with a warm, golden light that could chase away any shadowy worries and invite the sweetest, most peaceful dreams. Each night, before the moon climbed high, Ava would carefully light the lantern with a tiny, shimmering spark she kept safe in her heart. Then, holding the lantern by its delicate, leafy handle, she would hop silently through the sleepy woods.

Tonight, as she hopped, the air was cool and smelled of damp earth and late-blooming flowers. The stars began to twinkle, like tiny diamonds scattered across a dark velvet blanket. Ava saw a little field mouse, curled up in a nest of soft grass, stirring restlessly. Gently, Ava held the Dream Lantern closer, letting its golden glow wash over the mouse. Immediately, the little mouse sighed a contented sigh and drifted into a peaceful slumber, perhaps dreaming of plump berries and warm sunshine.

Further on, she found a sleepy squirrel who had forgotten to hide his last acorn. He was muttering softly in his sleep. Ava smiled, her lantern casting a gentle light on his bushy tail. The squirrel relaxed, his whiskers no longer twitching with worry. He would surely dream of finding the perfect nut, ready for a cozy winter morning.

Ava continued her quiet journey, the Dream Lantern swinging gently, casting dancing shadows that looked like friendly sprites. She passed by a family of sleepy owls, their eyes slowly closing, and a family of slumbering deer, nestled amongst the ferns. To each and every creature, great and small, Ava offered the soothing light of her lantern, ensuring their dreams were bright and calm.

Finally, her special task complete, Ava made her way back to her own snug burrow. The moon was now high in the sky, a friendly silvery orb watching over the sleeping world. Ava carefully placed the Dream Lantern beside her soft bed of moss. Its glow filled her burrow with a peaceful, golden light, chasing away any lingering darkness. She yawned a tiny bunny yawn, stretched her brave little legs, and snuggled down into her warm bed. As the last of the lantern's glow bathed her in comfort, Ava closed her eyes, feeling safe and loved, ready to drift into her own beautiful dreams.
