A story for: Remy, Age 5
Created October 22, 2026
The stars were beginning to twinkle, like tiny diamonds sprinkled on a dark velvet cloth, and the city lights below Remy’s window were just starting to shimmer. Remy snuggled deeper into his soft, warm bed, his favorite blue blanket pulled right up to his chin.
Tonight, Remy wanted to imagine the city as a gentle, sleeping friend. He closed his eyes, and in his mind, the tall buildings became sleepy giants, resting their heads against the soft, cloudy sky. The busy streets, usually filled with honking cars and bustling people, were now quiet ribbons of moonlight, stretching out peacefully.
He imagined the big buses were tucked into their cozy garages, dreaming of happy trips. The little yellow taxis were parked side-by-side, like rows of sleepy ducks, their engines quiet until morning. Even the bright traffic lights, which usually changed from red to yellow to green, were now a soft, sleepy amber, just barely glowing like embers in a campfire.
Remy pictured the big fountains in the park, their water gently bubbling, sounding like a soft, sleepy sigh. The leaves on the trees rustled ever so softly, whispering goodnight secrets to each other. He even imagined the little birds in their nests, all fluffed up and fast asleep, dreaming of worms and sunshine.
The city smelled different at night, Remy thought. Not like exhaust and warm hotdogs, but like fresh rain on the pavement and the gentle scent of a cool breeze. It was a comforting smell, like a big, soft hug.
He remembered watching the moon climb higher and higher, a big, round, friendly face peeking through his window. The moon seemed to be watching over the whole city, making sure everyone was safe and sound in their beds.
Remy heard a faint, distant hum. It wasn't loud or jarring; it was a soft, steady thrum, like the city was breathing quietly in its sleep. It was a comforting sound, like a lullaby just for him. He imagined it was the sound of all the city’s dreams, floating up into the night sky, light and airy.
His eyelids felt heavy, like two little sleepy butterflies. The soft glow from the streetlights outside made patterns on his wall, dancing gently. Each little light seemed to be winking goodnight.
Remy yawned a big, happy yawn. He pulled his blue blanket a little tighter, feeling so safe and warm. The city outside was a quiet, peaceful friend, dreaming alongside him. He took a deep, slow breath, listening to the soft hum, and as he let it out, Remy drifted off to sleep, a tiny smile on his face, dreaming of the quiet, beautiful city.
