Sage's Sleepy Ocean Song

A story for: Sage, Age 5

Created September 04, 2026

Far, far away, in the deepest, bluest part of the ocean, lived a kind and gentle whale named Sage. Sage wasn't just any whale; she had the most beautiful, softest singing voice in all the sea. Her songs were like lullabies, warm and comforting, and they could make even the busiest little fish feel sleepy.

Every evening, as the sun dipped its fiery orange toes into the water, Sage knew it was time for her special job. All the little sea creatures, from the shimmering silver fish to the slow, steady sea turtles, would start to feel a little tired. The coral reefs, usually bustling with tiny crabs, would begin to quiet down.

Sage would swim to her favorite quiet spot, a cozy alcove filled with glowing anemones that blinked like tiny stars. She'd take a deep, gentle breath, and then, a soft, low hum would begin. "Mmmmmm-ooh-mmm," she would sing, a sound that traveled through the water like a warm hug.

The little clownfish, who usually darted in and out of their anemone homes, would slow their wiggles. Their bright orange fins would barely flutter as Sage's song wrapped around them. The seahorses, usually busy twirling their tails around seaweed, would gently uncurl and find a comfy leaf to rest on.

Sage's song would get a little softer with each passing wave. "Sleep, little fish, sleep," she'd hum. "Dream of sunbeams and ocean deep." The water itself seemed to calm, its currents growing smoother and more peaceful. The big, powerful waves that played during the day would become gentle ripples, just enough to rock the sleeping creatures ever so slightly.

Even the biggest creatures, like the wise old octopuses who lived in their hidden caves, would feel Sage's song. Their eight long arms, usually busy exploring, would curl up snugly as they closed their big, watchful eyes.

As the moon, like a giant pearl, began to peek through the water's surface, Sage's song would become barely a whisper. "Goodnight, dear ocean, goodnight," she'd murmur, her voice like the softest silk. The entire ocean, from the tiniest plankton to the oldest whale, would be in a deep, peaceful sleep, rocked by Sage's lullaby.

Finally, when the last sleepy sparkle had vanished from the water, Sage herself would begin to feel drowsy. Her own eyelids, as big as dinner plates, would feel heavy. She'd find a soft patch of sand, nestled amongst some friendly seaweed, and gently settle down. With one last, contented sigh, Sage would close her eyes, her beautiful song having sung the whole wide ocean, and herself, into a sweet and peaceful slumber.
