Nora and the Dream Lantern

A story for: Nora, Age 7

Created October 28, 2026

Once upon a time, nestled deep in a meadow filled with soft clover and twinkling fireflies, lived a little bunny named Nora. Nora was a brave bunny, even though she was small. Every evening, as the sun dipped below the hills, painting the sky in sleepy shades of orange and purple, Nora would prepare for her most important task.

Her task was to care for the Dream Lantern. This wasn't just any lantern; it was a special, glowing orb that hummed with a gentle light. It was said that the Dream Lantern helped all the little creatures in the meadow have the sweetest, most wonderful dreams. Without its light, dreams might get a little lost or tangled, and no one wanted that!

Tonight, the moon was a sliver in the sky, and the stars were beginning to pop out like tiny diamonds. Nora carefully hopped to the mossy nook where the Dream Lantern rested. It pulsed with a soft, warm glow, like a heartbeat.

“Hello, dear Lantern,” Nora whispered, her nose twitching. “Are you ready to light up some dreams tonight?”

The lantern seemed to shimmer a little brighter in response. Nora gently picked it up, feeling its warmth spread through her paws. Her job was to carry the lantern on a quiet journey around the meadow, making sure its light touched every burrrow, every bird's nest, and every cozy hollow.

First, she carried it past the sleepy badger’s sett. She imagined the badger dreaming of a delicious feast of plump worms. Then, she tiptoed past the sleeping robin, who might be dreaming of flying high above the tallest oak tree. She even carried it to the edge of the whispering stream, where the tiny fish dreamt of dancing with the moonlight.

As Nora walked, the lantern’s light cast long, dancing shadows behind her, like friendly giants keeping watch. The air was cool and smelled of damp earth and night-blooming flowers. Every sound was soft – the rustle of leaves, the distant hoot of an owl, the gentle chirping of crickets.

Nora felt a warm peace settle over her. She knew that because of her and the Dream Lantern, all her friends in the meadow would have happy, peaceful dreams. Her little bunny heart swelled with contentment.

Finally, her journey was complete. She returned the Dream Lantern to its mossy nook, its light now a soft, steady beacon. Nora found her own burrrow, snuggling into her bed of softest grass. As her eyes grew heavy, she imagined the lantern’s glow spreading, filling the meadow, and touching her own sleepy mind. She dreamt of chasing butterflies in a field of endless sunshine, feeling safe and loved. And as she dreamt, a tiny smile played on her furry face, her breathing even and deep.
