A story for: Leo, Age 7
Created October 20, 2026
Leo was a very special boy, a tiny astronaut with a helmet that sparkled like a million fireflies. Tonight, his mission wasn't to discover new stars or race through asteroid fields. Tonight, Leo's mission was to find the sleepiest planet in the whole wide galaxy.
He climbed into his cozy, bubble-shaped spaceship, which hummed a soft lullaby as it lifted off from his bedroom floor. First, they visited Planet Shimmer. It was a beautiful place, covered in oceans that glittered like scattered diamonds. Little fish with fins like gossamer wings swam in slow, graceful circles, and the air smelled faintly of moonlight. Leo watched them, his eyelids feeling a little heavy, but Planet Shimmer was still too bright, too twinkly for truly deep sleep.
“Next stop,” Leo whispered, his voice a sleepy sigh, “Planet Mellow.”
The spaceship drifted towards a planet cloaked in soft, fluffy clouds the color of lavender. As they got closer, Leo saw that Planet Mellow had gentle hills covered in velvety moss, and trees with leaves like outstretched hands, swaying ever so slightly in a breeze you could barely feel. Tiny, glowing moss-creatures blinked on and off, like slow, sleepy winks. A soft, distant sound, like the ocean breathing, filled the air.
Leo stepped out, his boots sinking just a little into the soft ground. He lay down on the moss, feeling its coolness against his cheek. He watched the moss-creatures, their lights growing dimmer and dimmer, as if they too were getting ready for bed. He felt himself yawn, a big, wide yawn that stretched all the way from his toes to his nose.
But then, a tiny, flute-like sound floated past. It was a little more active than completely sleepy, a gentle song that made his toes want to wiggle just a little. “Almost, Planet Mellow,” Leo murmured, “but not quite the sleepiest.”
His spaceship knew just where to go next. It was a tiny, moon-like planet, so quiet it seemed to hold its breath. This was Planet Whisper. It was painted in the deepest shades of indigo and violet, and instead of trees, there were tall, soft reeds that whispered secrets to the wind, secrets so gentle you could hardly hear them. The ground was made of powder-fine dust, cool and comforting under his feet.
There were no bright lights here, only the soft, distant glow of other stars, like tiny pinpricks in a dark velvet cloth. No fish, no moss-creatures, just the quiet.
Leo found a hollow in the ground, perfectly shaped for him. He curled up, his helmet reflecting the deep, peaceful colors around him. The whispering reeds sang him a lullaby, so soft it felt like a tickle on his ear. He closed his eyes, and with each whisper, he felt himself drift further and further, deeper and deeper into a soft, warm sleep. Planet Whisper was the sleepiest planet of all, and Leo, the little astronaut, was finally, perfectly, fast asleep.
