Sage and the Starry Forest

A story for: Sage, Age 6

Created November 04, 2026

Once upon a time, nestled deep within a cozy little burrow, lived a tiny mouse named Sage. Sage had soft, velvety fur the color of moonlight and the biggest, brightest eyes you ever did see. Every night, before she snuggled down, Sage would peek out of her burrow entrance, gazing at the inky black sky. She loved the stars, but tonight, they seemed to twinkle with a special invitation.

“Oh, if only I could touch a star,” she whispered, her tiny whiskers twitching with wonder. Just then, a gentle breeze carried a faint, sweet scent, like honey and dew drops. It seemed to be coming from the old oak tree at the edge of the meadow.

Curiosity, a very strong feeling for a small mouse, tickled Sage’s nose. She tiptoed out of her burrow, her little paws making soft pitter-patter sounds on the cool earth. As she neared the oak tree, a marvelous sight unfolded before her. The forest beyond the tree wasn’t dark at all! It was glowing!

Tiny, shimmering lights, like fallen stars, hung from every leaf and branch. Some pulsed softly, like a sleepy heart, while others glittered like diamonds. This was the Starry Forest, a secret place that only appeared on the clearest, quietest nights.

Sage, filled with a joyful courage, stepped into the Starry Forest. The ground beneath her paws felt like velvet moss, and the air was warm and smelled of sweet lavender. A group of fireflies, their little lanterns glowing, danced around a particularly bright, blue light that hummed with a gentle song. It was a fallen star, no bigger than her paw, resting on a bed of soft fern.

Carefully, Sage reached out her paw. The star felt warm and smooth, like a polished pebble, and a soft light spread from it, making her fur shimmer. She giggled, a tiny, happy sound, and then she lay down beside the little star. Its light pulsed with a slow, calming rhythm, and the warmth spread through her, making her feel safe and loved.

One by one, the other little star-lights in the forest seemed to dim a little, as if they were settling down for the night too. The fireflies blinked goodbye, and the gentle hum of the blue star became a sleepy lullaby.

Sage closed her eyes. The Starry Forest was the most beautiful place she had ever seen, and the little fallen star was the kindest friend. She felt her eyelids grow heavy, and a soft, happy sigh escaped her. With the gentle glow of the star beside her, and the peaceful hush of the forest all around, Sage drifted off into a sweet, star-filled sleep, dreaming of moonbeams and quiet adventures.
