Ruby's City Lullaby

A story for: Ruby, Age 4

Created August 10, 2026

Once upon a time, in a cozy little apartment high up in a tall building, lived a sweet girl named Ruby. Ruby loved her city. She loved the bright lights and the busy sounds, but most of all, she loved her comfy bed.

Tonight, Ruby was tucked in, her soft blanket pulled up to her chin. Outside her window, the city was beginning to hum its sleepy tune. The big, bright sun had said goodnight, and the moon, like a friendly nightlight, was starting to glow.

Ruby looked out. The streetlights, one by one, flickered on, like little stars waking up on the ground. A car zoomed by, its headlights making a swoosh of light, like a sleepy fish swimming in the dark.

Ruby imagined the city was getting ready for bed too. The big buses, which chugged along all day, were now resting in their garages, dreaming of adventures tomorrow. The busy trains, who carried so many people, were quietly parked, their wheels still and silent.

Up high, she saw the lights in other windows. Maybe a mommy was reading a story, or a daddy was singing a lullaby, just like her mommy did. Each little light was like a tiny hug, spreading warmth across the big city.

Ruby closed her eyes for a moment, listening. The distant sound of a siren, like a sleepy owl hooting far away, faded into the quiet night. The gentle breeze whispered through the open window, making the curtains dance a slow, sleepy waltz.

Her teddy bear, Barnaby, was snuggled beside her, his button eyes almost closed. Ruby patted his soft fur. "Goodnight, Barnaby," she whispered. "The city is sleeping."

She thought about the tall buildings, standing like quiet giants, watching over everyone. She imagined the park where she played, its swings hanging still, waiting for morning giggles. Even the little birds, who sang so loudly in the day, were tucked into their nests, dreaming of worms and sunshine.

Ruby took a big, deep breath. It smelled like clean sheets and a hint of cool night air. Her eyelids felt heavy, like two little sleepy butterflies. The soft glow of the moon peeked through her window, making a silver path on her rug.

She imagined floating on that silvery path, drifting gently, just like a cloud. The sounds of the city became softer and softer, like a faraway song. Her body felt warm and cozy, nestled in her bed, safe and loved.

As the city hummed its last lullaby, Ruby let out a little sigh. Her breathing became slow and even. The moon watched over her, and the city lights twinkled like sleepy eyes. Ruby was fast asleep, dreaming sweet dreams of her wonderful, peaceful city.
