Sage and the Sleepy Moon

A story for: Sage, Age 4

Created October 13, 2026

Once upon a time, high above the whispering trees and shimmering rivers, lived a very special dragon named Sage.

Sage wasn't like other dragons you might read about in books. He didn't breathe fire, and he certainly wasn't scary. Sage was a gentle dragon, with scales the color of soft moss and eyes as warm as honey. His favorite thing to do was to watch the world prepare for sleep.

Every night, as the sun dipped below the hills, Sage would stretch his long, graceful neck towards the sky. He loved to watch the stars begin to twinkle, one by one, like tiny diamonds scattered on a dark blanket. But there was one very important job Sage had each night: helping the Moon fall asleep.

Tonight, the Moon looked a little restless. She was shining so brightly, almost too brightly, and seemed to be wiggling just a tiny bit. Sage knew exactly what to do.

He spread his wide, leafy wings and took a deep, quiet breath. With a soft flutter, he lifted himself into the evening air, floating gently upwards, past the tallest mountain peaks and the fluffiest clouds. He moved so quietly, you could barely hear the whisper of his wings.

When he reached the Moon, he didn't touch her, but simply hovered nearby, his moss-green scales glowing softly in her light. “Hello, dear Moon,” Sage murmured in a voice like rustling leaves. “It’s time for quiet sleep, isn’t it?”

The Moon seemed to sigh, a very gentle sigh that made the clouds drift a little slower. Sage began to hum, a low, rumbling hum that sounded like a warm purr. It was a lullaby only the Moon could truly hear, a song of quiet stars and sleepy flowers. He hummed about the soft moss he loved to rest on, and the gentle breeze that tickled the leaves.

As Sage hummed, the Moon’s bright glow softened. Her edges seemed to blur just a little, like she was snuggling into a big, soft pillow made of clouds. The tiny wiggles stopped. Soon, the Moon was shining with a peaceful, sleepy light, casting silver beams down onto the quiet world below.

Sage knew his job was done. He gave the sleeping Moon one last, loving gaze, then turned and glided slowly back down towards his cozy cloud bed. The world was now truly quiet, bathed in the Moon’s gentle, sleepy glow.

He snuggled into his cloud, which felt like the softest cotton. The stars twinkled above him, like little sleepy eyes closing one by one. Sage yawned a big, silent yawn, his honey-warm eyes slowly blinking. He felt so happy, knowing the Moon was sleeping soundly, and the world was safe and quiet. Soon, with the soft lullaby of the night breeze, Sage closed his eyes and drifted into a sweet, peaceful sleep, ready for another day of gentle adventures.
