A story for: Jude, Age 6
Created October 13, 2026
Far, far away, in a land where stars twinkled like scattered diamonds, lived a very special dragon named Jude. Jude wasn't like the dragons in exciting stories; he didn't breathe fire or guard glittering gold. Jude was a gentle dragon, with scales the color of a soft twilight sky and wings like big, comforting blankets. His favorite thing to do was to help others feel calm and sleepy.
Every night, when the sun dipped below the hills, Jude would wake up with a soft yawn. His most important job was to help the Moon get ready for her long, peaceful slumber. The Moon, you see, worked very hard all night, shining her silver light down on the world, watching over all the sleeping creatures. But sometimes, even the Moon needed a little help drifting off to sleep when the sun started to peek.
Tonight, Jude flew up, up, up into the sky, his gentle wings making not a sound. He found the Moon looking a little tired, her glow a tiny bit dim. “Hello, dear Moon,” Jude whispered, his voice like the soft rustle of leaves. “Are you ready for your rest?”
“Oh, Jude,” the Moon sighed, a long, weary sigh. “I am so sleepy, but my light just keeps wanting to shine! I can’t seem to turn it off.”
Jude smiled. He knew just what to do. He began to hum a very soft, sleepy tune, a melody only the Moon and the stars could hear. As he hummed, he gently unfurled his big, soft wings. Slowly, carefully, he began to wrap them around the Moon, not to hide her, but to create a cozy, warm cocoon of quiet.
The Moon’s bright edges began to soften. Jude’s scales, cool and smooth, felt comforting against her tired glow. He gently stroked her surface with his long, soft nose, like a mother cat nudging her kittens. “Shhh, Moon,” he murmured. “Let your light dim, little by little. Let the quiet fill you up.”
As Jude sang his lullaby and held the Moon in his gentle embrace, her light grew softer and softer. The stars around them seemed to twinkle just a little bit slower, as if they, too, were feeling sleepy. Soon, the Moon was a pale, sleepy crescent, tucked safely in Jude’s loving wings.
“Goodnight, dear Moon,” Jude whispered, kissing her gently on her quiet surface. He watched as the first rays of sunlight tiptoed over the horizon, promising a new day. He knew the Moon would sleep soundly until it was time for her to wake again.
Feeling happy and content, Jude stretched his big wings one last time and began his slow descent back to his own cozy cloud. The air grew warmer as he floated down, and the world below was just starting to stir. When he reached his soft, fluffy bed made of starlight and moonbeams, Jude curled into a big, comfortable ball. He closed his twilight-colored eyes, listening to the quiet breathing of the waking world. A soft, peaceful smile spread across his face, and with a contented sigh, Jude drifted off to sleep, dreaming of quiet skies and sleepy moons.
