A story for: Arlo, Age 4
Created October 13, 2026
Once upon a time, nestled deep in a big, quiet forest, lived a tiny mouse named Arlo. Arlo had the softest, grey fur and the brightest, most curious eyes you ever did see. Every evening, as the sun dipped down and painted the sky in sleepy oranges and pinks, Arlo would peek out from his cozy little home under a friendly oak tree.
Tonight, just like many nights, Arlo felt a little flutter of excitement in his tiny chest. He loved the stars. They looked like diamonds sprinkled on a velvet blanket, winking hello just for him. He scurried out, his little paws making the softest pat-pat-pat sounds on the cool earth. The air smelled of damp leaves and sweet night flowers. A gentle breeze whispered through the tall trees, sounding like a lullaby.
Arlo found his favorite spot, a smooth, flat stone that was still a little warm from the day’s sunshine. He curled up, making himself as small and comfortable as a fluffy dandelion seed. He looked up, up, up at the vast, dark sky. One by one, the stars began to pop out, tiny pinpricks of light. "Hello, little stars," Arlo whispered, his voice as soft as a sigh.
He watched the stars twinkle and dance. He imagined they were telling silent stories to each other, stories of faraway clouds and sleepy moons. A big, round owl hooted softly from a branch above, "Whooo, whooo," a comforting sound in the stillness. A cricket chirped a sleepy tune, zip-zip-zip, like a tiny zipper closing up the day.
Arlo felt his eyelids grow heavy. The stars seemed to sparkle even brighter, like they were sending him special sleepy dust. He stretched his little nose up towards them, taking a slow, deep breath. The world felt safe and quiet, full of gentle sounds and soft lights.
He thought of his warm bed inside his tree-root home, lined with fluffy thistle-down. Soon, he would be tucked in tight. But for now, he let the peaceful feeling of the night wash over him. The stars were his friends, watching over him as he drifted off to sleep. His head drooped a little, and his tiny paws relaxed. The gentle breeze brushed his fur. Arlo closed his eyes, and a soft, happy sigh escaped him. He was fast asleep, dreaming of twinkling lights and sweet forest lullabies, safe and sound under the watchful, starry sky.
