Arlo's Dream Lantern

A story for: Arlo, Age 5

Created September 19, 2026

Deep within the Whispering Woods, where the moonbeams danced on soft moss, lived a little bunny named Arlo. Arlo was not just any bunny; he was a very brave bunny with the fluffiest tail and the twitchiest nose. Every evening, as the stars began to twinkle, Arlo would prepare for his most important job: lighting the dreams.

His most prized possession was a tiny, glowing lantern. It wasn't just any lantern; it was a Dream Lantern. It held a special, soft light that could find its way into every cozy burrow and every leafy nest, gently guiding sweet dreams to sleepy eyes.

Tonight, Arlo had a very important task. A little field mouse, who had been feeling a bit worried about a big berry-picking adventure tomorrow, needed an extra special dream. Arlo knew just what to do. He hopped out of his warm burrow, his little lantern swinging gently, casting soft, golden puddles of light on the path.

He passed the sleepy owls, their eyes like golden buttons, and the quiet deer, tucked under the tall ferns. The forest was peaceful, filled with the gentle hum of night. Arlo didn't feel scared at all, because his Dream Lantern always kept the shadows friendly.

He reached the field mouse's burrow, a tiny home snuggled under a patch of clover. Arlo carefully held his lantern high. Its light, like a tiny sunbeam, seeped through the cracks, painting the field mouse's dreams with warmth and courage. He imagined the mouse dreaming of bright red berries, easy to pick, and happy little songs.

Arlo then visited the baby birds, who were chirping softly in their sleep. For them, he shone the lantern’s light, and they dreamed of learning to fly, soaring high above the trees with fluffy white clouds to play with. He made sure the sleepy squirrel dreamed of delicious acorns and sunny days for burying them.

With each dream lit, Arlo felt a warm, happy flutter in his chest. He knew he was helping his friends have the sweetest, calmest sleep. Finally, his big job was done. The Dream Lantern's glow had reached every corner of the Whispering Woods, filling it with peaceful slumber.

Arlo felt his own eyelids growing heavy. He hopped back to his burrow, snuggling into his bed of softest leaves. He placed his Dream Lantern carefully beside him, its light now just a tiny, sleepy flicker. He closed his eyes, and as the last bit of light from the lantern faded into a soft, warm feeling, Arlo drifted off to sleep, ready for his own sweet dreams, knowing he had made the night gentle and bright for everyone.
