Ruby's City Lullaby

A story for: Ruby, Age 6

Created November 06, 2026

Ruby lay in her cozy bed, tucked under her softest blanket. Outside her window, the big city lights twinkled like a thousand tiny stars scattered across a dark velvet cloth. She loved her city at night.

The tall buildings, usually so busy and bustling, now stood quietly, like sleeping giants. Their windows glowed with warm, gentle light, some orange, some yellow, like little sleepy eyes winking goodnight. Ruby imagined each light was a small lamp in someone’s home, where families were settling down, just like her.

She listened carefully. The loud honks of the daytime taxis had softened into a gentle hum, like a giant, friendly bee buzzing far away. The rumbling of the buses was now a low, soothing purr, as if the city itself was snuggling down for a long night's sleep. Even the little chattering of people had turned into a whisper, like the rustle of leaves on a quiet tree.

Ruby looked at the streetlights, standing tall and straight. They weren't lonely at all; they were like watchful guardians, making sure everyone felt safe and sound. A gentle breeze drifted through her open window, carrying the sweet, clean smell of night air. It made her feel like the whole city was breathing a soft, sleepy sigh.

She remembered her favorite park. During the day, it was full of laughter and the squeak of swings. Now, she imagined the swings hanging still, waiting patiently for morning. The merry-go-round was probably dreaming of colorful spins, and the slide was resting, ready for its next adventure.

Ruby closed her eyes, picturing all these sleepy scenes. She thought of the little bakeries, their ovens now cool, waiting to bake warm bread in the morning. She thought of the toy store, its shelves full of sleeping dolls and quiet teddy bears, dreaming of playtime.

Her own toys were sleeping soundly in their toy box. Her teddy bear, Barnaby, was snuggled beside her, a soft, fuzzy friend. Ruby took a deep, gentle breath, feeling her blanket warm around her. The city outside her window seemed to hum a soft lullaby, a quiet song just for her.

The twinkling lights became blurry behind her eyelids. The gentle hum of the city grew softer and softer, like a faraway song. Ruby felt her own body becoming heavy and warm, just like the sleepy city. She was safe, she was loved, and the whole city was now sleeping right along with her. With a final, peaceful sigh, Ruby drifted into a sweet, dream-filled sleep.
