A story for: Ruby, Age 4
Created June 27, 2026
Once upon a time, in a cozy little apartment high up in a tall building, lived a sweet girl named Ruby. Ruby loved her city. She loved the busy sounds and the bright lights, but most of all, she loved the quiet time just before bed.
Tonight, Ruby was snuggled deep in her warm blanket, looking out her window. The city lights twinkled like a million tiny stars scattered across the ground. "Goodnight, city," she whispered softly.
The tall buildings, usually so busy, were starting to settle down. The cars below were making softer sounds, like gentle hums, and the streetlights blinked on, one by one, like sleepy eyes opening to say goodnight.
Ruby imagined the big buses, after a long day of carrying people, parking neatly in their garages, getting ready for a good night's rest. She thought of the little taxis, their yellow lights dimming, dreaming of new adventures tomorrow.
She saw the park, usually full of children playing and laughter, now quiet and still. The swings hung gently, waiting for the sun to wake them up again. Even the squirrels, who loved to chase each other all day, were tucked into their tree nests, warm and safe.
Ruby's eyes drifted to the big clock tower in the distance. Its face glowed softly, telling everyone it was time for sleep. Ding-dong, ding-dong, its chimes were so gentle now, like a lullaby carried on the soft night air.
Ruby thought of the little bakery downstairs. The baker had probably just finished baking all the delicious bread and cakes for tomorrow, and now he was resting too, dreaming of warm croissants and sweet muffins.
Even the busy river, that flowed all day long, seemed to slow its pace at night. The little boats rocked ever so gently, their reflections dancing softly on the water, like tiny fireflies.
Ruby felt herself getting sleepier and sleepier. The city was wrapping itself in a big, soft blanket of night. Everything was quiet, peaceful, and calm.
She yawned a big, sleepy yawn. Her eyelids felt heavy, just like the big, sleepy clouds that sometimes floated across the sky. The twinkling lights outside her window blurred into a soft, glowing haze.
Ruby closed her eyes. She could still hear the gentle hum of the city, a comforting sound that told her everything was just right. She drifted off to sleep, warm and safe in her bed, dreaming sweet dreams of her wonderful, sleepy city.
