Zoe's Sleepy Ocean Song

A story for: Zoe, Age 5

Created July 13, 2026

Deep in the big, big blue ocean lived a gentle whale named Zoe. Zoe wasn't like other whales who loved to splash and play loudly all day. Zoe loved the quiet. She loved to hum, a soft, deep sound that made the water around her feel warm and peaceful.

Every evening, as the sun dipped its sleepy head below the wavy horizon, Zoe knew it was her special job to sing the ocean to sleep. She would take a deep, slow breath, filling her enormous lungs with the clean ocean air, and then begin her lullaby.

Her song was a quiet rumble, a gentle vibration that traveled far and wide. The little silver fish, darting and giggling all day, would slow their wiggles and tuck themselves into cozy coral beds. The busy crabs, always scuttling sideways, would stop their clicking and pull their shell blankets tight. Even the big, friendly sea turtles, who loved to float lazily, would close their eyes, their flippers resting softly.

Zoe's song made the currents calm down, too. The water that swished and swayed all day long became still and smooth, like a giant, shimmering blue blanket. It whispered, 'Shhh, shhh,' as if telling all the ocean creatures it was time for quiet dreams.

She sang about the moon, a round, soft pearl in the sky, watching over them all. She sang about the stars, like tiny, twinkling diamonds scattered across the dark, velvet sky. Her voice was like a warm hug, comforting every little sea creature, from the smallest seahorse to the biggest manta ray.

As Zoe sang, she would float gently upwards, her huge body moving with such grace it looked like she was dancing in slow motion. The moonlight would touch her smooth, grey skin, making her glow a soft silver. She felt the peace of the ocean all around her, and her own heart felt full of warmth and calm.

Slowly, Zoe's song grew softer and softer. Her hum became a whisper, then just a gentle breath. The last notes drifted away like tiny bubbles, popping silently in the dark, quiet water. The ocean was asleep, dreaming sweet, watery dreams.

Zoe felt a soft yawn bubble up inside her. Her eyelids, as big as small pillows, felt heavy. She found a quiet, sandy spot on the ocean floor, nestled herself down, and let out a contented sigh. The last thing she felt was the gentle sway of the sleeping ocean, and then, Zoe, too, drifted off into a peaceful sleep, her own dreams filled with quiet hums and starlit waters.
