A story for: Wren, Age 7
Created August 25, 2026
Deep, deep down in the vast, shimmering ocean lived a gentle whale named Wren. Wren wasn't like other whales who might sing loud, booming songs that echoed through the water. Wren's songs were soft, like a lullaby woven from moonlight and seafoam.
Every evening, as the sun dipped below the waves and painted the sky in shades of pink and purple, Wren would begin her special task. It was her job to sing the ocean to sleep. The little fish, who had been darting and playing all day, would slow their wiggles. The busy crabs, scuttling across the sandy bottom, would pause their hurried sideways walks.
First, Wren would take a deep, slow breath, feeling the cool water fill her enormous lungs. Then, a quiet hum would start in her heart, a sound like a distant, sleepy bell. It would travel up through her body and out into the water, a vibration so gentle it felt like a soft hug.
Her song didn't have words, but it told a story. It spoke of the quiet comfort of the deep, dark ocean. It hummed about the way the stars twinkled like tiny diamonds far above the surface. It whispered of dreams made of coral castles and rainbow-colored sea anemones.
As Wren sang, the little clownfish would tuck themselves into their cozy anemone homes, their bright colors dimming slightly as they yawned. The shy seahorses would wrap their tails around seaweed, swaying gently with the current, their eyes slowly closing. Even the big, friendly sea turtles would find a soft patch of sand to rest their ancient shells, listening to Wren's calming melody.
The water itself seemed to grow calmer, the gentle currents becoming even softer, like a blanket settling over the ocean floor. Wren's song was like a warm, invisible net, catching all the worries and busy thoughts of the day and letting them drift away into the quiet night.
Sometimes, a curious dolphin, who usually loved to leap and play, would swim close to Wren, listening intently. The dolphin’s usual playful clicks and whistles would soften to tiny, contented sighs, its tail barely moving as it floated peacefully.
Wren would sing until the moon was high in the sky, a silver coin hanging above the waves. By then, the entire ocean, from the smallest plankton to the biggest sharks, would be bathed in a deep, peaceful slumber. Only then would Wren let her own eyelids grow heavy.
With one last, lingering note, like a gentle whisper, Wren would close her eyes. She would feel the cool water rocking her, just as her song had rocked all the ocean creatures. A soft, happy sigh would escape her, and Wren, the gentle whale who sang the ocean to sleep, would drift into her own beautiful dreams, ready to wake and sing again when the sun returned.
