Ruby and the Whispering Willows

A story for: Ruby, Age 6

Created August 01, 2026

Ruby snuggled deep into her soft, blue blankets. Outside her window, the big, round moon peeked through the leaves of the old willow tree, casting gentle, silvery patterns on her bedroom wall.

Tonight, Ruby was thinking about all the wonderful things she did today. She had built a magnificent tower with her blocks, taller than her teddy bear, Barnaby. When it wobbled, she didn't give up! She found a wider block for the bottom and made it strong and steady. Barnaby had clapped his little paws in delight.

Later, she had drawn a picture for her grandma. It was a picture of a sparkly unicorn with a rainbow mane, flying over a field of sunflowers. At first, she thought, "Oh dear, my unicorn's horn looks a bit wobbly." But then she remembered her blocks and how she made them strong. So, she carefully drew another line, making the horn perfect and pointy.

Just before bed, her dad had asked her to help sort the colorful buttons. There were so many! Reds, blues, greens, and sparkly ones. It looked like a big, colorful puzzle. Ruby took a deep breath and started with the red ones, putting them all in a little pile. Then the blue ones. Soon, all the buttons were neatly sorted. Her dad gave her a big hug and said, "Ruby, you are so good at thinking things through!"

Ruby closed her eyes, and the silvery moonlight seemed to dance on her eyelids. She imagined she was standing by the whispering willow tree in her backyard. The tree's long, leafy branches swayed gently, like a friendly lullaby.

The willow branches whispered, "Ruby, you are brave when you try again." Another branch swayed, "You are clever when you find new ways." And the softest branch, right near her ear, seemed to hum, "You are wonderful, just as you are."

Ruby felt a warm, fuzzy feeling spread through her. It was the feeling of knowing she could do things, even if they seemed a little tricky at first. It was the feeling of being happy with herself, just like Barnaby was happy with his strong tower, and Grandma would be happy with her sparkly unicorn.

She took a slow, deep breath, feeling her tummy rise and fall like a gentle wave. The whispers of the willow tree grew softer and softer, blending with the quiet hum of her sleepy room. Ruby snuggled even deeper, feeling safe and cozy and very, very confident. Her eyelids grew heavy, her breathing evened out, and soon, Ruby drifted off to sleep, dreaming of sparkly unicorns and strong towers, knowing she could do anything she set her mind to.
