Mia and the Dream Lantern

A story for: Mia, Age 5

Created August 20, 2026

In a cozy burrow, tucked beneath the roots of a giant oak tree, lived a little bunny named Mia. Mia had the softest, fluffiest white fur and long, twitchy ears that could hear the tiniest whispers of the night.

Every evening, as the sun dipped below the hills, Mia would feel a little tingle of excitement. Not just because it was bedtime, but because it was almost time for her special job. Mia was the keeper of the Dream Lantern.

The Dream Lantern wasn't like any other lantern. It glowed with a gentle, warm light, like a firefly's hug. It didn't light the way in the dark; it lit the way to good dreams.

Tonight, as the stars began to twinkle like tiny diamonds in the velvet sky, Mia carefully hopped to her special shelf. There it was, nestled on a bed of soft moss, humming softly. She picked it up with her front paws, its warmth spreading through her little body.

“Time to light the dreams,” she whispered, her nose wiggling with delight.

Mia hopped out of her burrow, the Dream Lantern swinging gently beside her. She didn't need to go far. The Dream Lantern didn't shine outwards; it shone inwards, towards the sleeping hearts of all the forest creatures.

First, she thought of Old Mr. Badger, who liked dreams of digging up yummy roots. The lantern gave a soft flicker, sending a comforting glow towards his burrow.

Then she thought of Mrs. Squirrel, who loved dreams of finding the biggest, juiciest acorns. The lantern glowed a little brighter, a happy shimmer dancing within its glass.

Mia hopped a little further, thinking of all the baby birds nestled in their nests, dreaming of flying high in the sky. She thought of the sleepy deer, dreaming of sweet clover fields. With each thought, the Dream Lantern pulsed with a loving light, guiding every sleepy creature to their happiest dreams.

Finally, Mia felt a gentle yawn stretch her little mouth wide. Her job was almost done. She had sent warm, happy dreams to everyone in the forest. Now it was her turn.

She hopped back into her cozy burrow, snuggling into her soft, leafy bed. She placed the Dream Lantern carefully beside her, its light now just a soft, steady hum. It was like a lullaby made of light.

Mia closed her eyes, feeling the warmth of the lantern, and listened to the quiet whispers of the night. She imagined a field of the juiciest, sweetest carrots, just for her. A soft smile touched her lips as she drifted off to sleep, knowing that the Dream Lantern would keep her dreams, and everyone else's, bright and happy until morning. Sweet dreams, little Mia.
